At $795 the Reserve only pays off if you actually spend the credits, and most of them are narrow. The $300 travel credit is the easy one. The $300 dining credit needs restaurants in the Exclusive Tables program, the $500 hotel credit needs prepaid stays through The Edit, and the $300 in DoorDash promos arrive $25 a month. Count only the ones you would have spent anyway before you subtract the fee.
What you get for the money is real if you fly often: 4x on flights and hotels booked direct, 3x on dining, Sapphire Lounges plus Priority Pass, and a Global Entry credit. Outside travel and dining it earns 1x, so on everyday spending the rewards alone do not come close to the fee. That is normal for a premium card and is why the credits matter.
The 100,000-point bonus after $6,000 in three months is the biggest single reason to open it in a given year. If the credits and the bonus both line up for you, it is the strongest travel card Chase makes. If only one does, the Preferred keeps most of the earning for $95.
